Welcome to twominenglish.com. Teaching you English through two-minute lessons.
In this extra learning lesson, we will learn in detail about the words and phrases you use when you say goodbye.
Sean: When you are going somewhere or when you separate from someone, you say goodbye. You can simply say ‘Bye!’, but there are a number of different ways in which you can say goodbye.
Lydia: That’s correct. Knowing all the different ways is important because then you can understand how to properly respond to people, and understand what they are saying to you.
Sean: Saying goodbye.
When you are saying goodbye you can say, ‘Bye’, ‘Goodbye’, ‘See you later’, ‘See you soon’. These are universal phrases for farewells, and you can use them with anyone, be it a senior, a friend, a relative or someone younger. From this list, ‘goodbye’ is the formal way to finish a conversation and say you are leaving.
Lydia: Along with goodbye you can also say ‘It was a pleasure meeting you.’, ‘It was a pleasure talking to you.’ or ‘It was a pleasure.’, when you meet someone for the first time.
Lydia: There is one more thing I would like to tell you. Always say ‘Goodnight!’ instead of ‘Goodbye’ at night time.
Sean: That’s a great point. Now let’s talk about the informal ways of saying goodbye.
When you are separating from a friend or someone close, you can use informal phrases. They may be: ‘Bye!’, See ya!’ or ‘Catch ya later!’.
Lydia: Right. We use these phrases when we say goodbye to our friends, colleagues, siblings, or just someone who is equal to you or younger than you.
You can also add phrases like ‘Take care’, ‘Gotta go!’ or ‘See ya tomorrow!’ in addition to the goodbye to make it more personal.
Sean: I hope this extra learning lesson was helpful and now you are better at saying goodbye to people. Don’t forget to watch the original lesson by clicking on the link given in the description. See you soon!
