After the Loss of a Loved One

Ethan: Hey Leslie, why haven’t you been coming to college?

Leslie: I lost my grandmother last week.

Ethan: Gosh! I’m so sorry to hear it! I had no idea. What happened?

Leslie: She slipped in the bathroom and had brain hemorrhage.

Ethan: What a horrible accident! How are you coping with it?

Leslie: I’m better now. But I miss her so much.

Ethan: I know it’s hard. You must give it time. You and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Leslie: You’re a good friend, Ethan. Thanks.

When Someone is Fired

Kate: Hey Ethan! How are you doing?

Ethan: Not that good.

Kate: What happened?

Ethan: I lost my job. The company’s been downsizing and I was on the list.

Kate: Oh! That’s bad. I’m sorry. You need any help?

Ethan: I’m looking for a job right now. I have some interviews lined up for next week.

Kate: You’re in the construction business, right?

Ethan: Yes, that’s right.

Kate: I’ll keep my eyes opened for opportunities. If I spot anything, I’ll let you know.

Ethan: Thanks a lot Kate. I will be so grateful.

When a Friend Has to Move Away

Kate: Hey Leslie! What’s the truck for?

Leslie: We are moving to New York.

Kate: Oh! Just like that? Is everything alright?

Leslie: My grandmother died last week so my grandpa is all alone there now. We’re going to live with him for some time.

Kate: I’m so sorry to hear all that. When will you be back?

Leslie: I have no idea. My whole life’s in here but grandpa needs us there.

Kate: I know you’ll get through this. If there’s anything I can help you with, just let me know.

Leslie: Thank you very much, Kate.

After a Breakup

John: Nice to see you, Kate! How are you? And how’s Jim?

Kate: Hi John, it looks like you haven’t heard it...

John: What? What have I missed?

Kate: Jim and I broke up. As a matter of fact, he dumped me.

John: I can’t believe it, Kate. I’m so sorry. I hope you know how beautiful and smart you are.

Kate: You’re very kind, John.

John: I mean it. I’m sure you’ll be happy again.

Kate: You can bet I will!
